What does AI have to do with headlights? - Part 1

Published at May 8, 2024 at 8:34 AM

Headlights that are too bright or too dark pose a serious danger. However, not all headlights are the same and their settings are becoming increasingly complex.

‘Special test devices are used for the approval and regular inspection of headlights in the automotive sector. These devices use sensors to measure how the light from the headlamp is distributed and analyse this measurement data using defined evaluation procedures. New technologies such as matrix LED headlights and the different ‘Advanced Frontlighting System’ (AFS) light distributions of the manufacturers pose major challenges for the existing evaluation methods. In addition, handling these test devices in workshops requires mechanics to have ever more extensive specialist knowledge.’ This is explained in a specialist article by the Mittelstand Digital Zentrum Chemnitz about the project ‘Classifying headlights using AI’.

We are part of this project and are responsible for software development and image processing. At the SpectroNet Collaboration Conference 2023 in Erfurt, the first results were presented, which already illustrate the enormous potential of AI in image processing and sensor technology. This is an example of AI projects that we can realise for our customers.
